What does it mean, Christ died for me, Christ died in our place?

  • We are sinners, we break God’s law (sin)
  • God loves man (John 3:16) but hates sin (Psalm 5:4)
  • Our sin separates us from God.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2)
  • We cannot get rid of our sin by good works (Eph 2:8-9)
  • Sin has a price that needs to be paid. If we pay for our sin we will have to pay for it by eternity in hell (Rom 6:23), (Rev 21:8)
  • Christ was sinless, He was perfect (2 Cor 5:21)
  • Christ voluntarily took our sins upon himself on the cross
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1st Corinthians 15:3-4).
  • Believe and you will be saved
“Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31)
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
  • You can know you have eternal life, when you by faith accept this payment Christ made for you.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13)

Christ was sinless, yet He was executed, suffering the death of a law breaking criminal. Because He was sinless His death paid for our sins and He gave us His righteousness in return. We deserve to pay for our sins by suffering in hell, yet Jesus took our sentence, upon Himself, suffering the punishment due to us.

Christ became our substitute and died in our place releasing us from the sin debt we owe. Our sin is no longer on us because Christ took it and paid for it. His sufferings made amends for our transgressions and He give us His righteousness in return.

Christ bearing the penalty of sin and dying in our place cancelled the legal charge against us. “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” (Colossians 2:13–14). In other words, God nailed all the accusations against us to the cross.

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
(1 Peter 1:18-19)

Forgiveness of sin is only possible because of the blood of Christ

“And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.” [forgiveness] (Hebrews 9:22)

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11)

Those who stay in hell, do so because their debt is never paid.
